Akira Yamaguchi is a contemporary artist known for his meticulous and humorous style, which incorporates techniques from Yamato-e and ukiyo-e painting. His work gained widespread recognition when the Tokyo scenery he painted appeared in the title sequence of NHK’s 2019 Taiga drama, Idaten: The Story of the Tokyo Olympics.
This work is part of the Yamato Nadeshiko (Nadeshiko Japan) series, created for the art festival Dogo Art 2016 held at Dogo Onsen. It depicts women in traditional kimono and women in athletic uniforms competing in the same event, creating a contrast between traditional images of Japanese women and modern, dynamic representations. The piece playfully presents the recurring theme in Yamaguchi’s work: the lighthearted collision of traditional art and contemporary culture. It is worth noting that original works by Yamaguchi rarely appear on the market, making the offering of this piece a particularly valuable opportunity.
